Hermit crabs have been kept as pets for some time now. However, they have become increasingly popular in recent years. Hermit crab lovers everywhere have made a hobby of raising hermit crabs. Some only have room for one or two Crabbie. Others have a real colony of these creatures. This love is born of hermit crabs as pets is not surprising, given that these crustaceans make great pets. There are several reasons why hermit crabs make great pets. They are fascinating creatures, the costs are low, and there are many options in regard to their surroundings and care.

hermitcrabFirst, the hermit crabs are great pets because they are fascinating creatures. Living in a shell that provides housing, which can go for a peek in the world around them or they can use their large claws as an iron-clad door, to prevent the outside world. They are active little animals, climbing anything and everything in its path. If there is anything in their path, they move without any problems. Each hermit crab has its own personality,be it shy, very active, or a fan of wading in the water. Hermit crabs, in my opinion, are some of the most fascinating creatures you can have.

Another reason why the hermit crabs make great pets is because they are relatively inexpensive pets. If you are looking for a pet and one of the factors that you are basing your choice on is the cost, a purebred puppy, a horse, or an exotic bird is not the pet for you. These types of pets can cost thousands of dollars just to buy, when you start thinking about food, shelter and vet bills for the maintenance of the pet, the cost sky rockets out of control. These types of pets can be very costly. Hermit crabs cost $ 4.00 – $ 20.00 per crab. If you are looking for a pet that is small, cheap and not get in the way of life, hermit crabs will definitely be an option for you as a pet.

If you have the money to create an environment for the crab, there are many options to choose from. You can choose to have many hermit crabs and create a kind of colony. You can also choose several different environments for them. From a large bowl to a  10-gallon aquarium, depending on the number of crabs you have and your budget, they are easy to house. You are free to choose what kind of house your hermit crab lives in.  You can also provide climbing toys  and a variety of different foods and sweets. They can also live to more than 20 years, so you can have a good friend for long.

There are many reasons the pet hermit crab boom is picking up. They are fascinating pets, they are low cost and low maintenance, and there are many options to choose from as far as setting up and maintaining their habitats. Overall, hermit crabs, with all their different little personalities, are terrific pets.

I have to call attention to your reference to keeping hermit crabs in a “large bowl, up to a 10 gallon tank”. It has been found as more people keep hermit crabs for pets, that while they are somewhat low maintenance and after the initial cost, they are pretty cheap to keep. But much is needed if you want your crab to live longer than 6 months. They need a glass home (10gal minimum), a lid to keep in humidity and temp, gauges to track temp and humidity, both ocean salt water and fresh water bowls, dechlorinator, a safe substrate, lots of extra shells, climbing toys and fake greenery, hiding spots, etc. Even with all of this, they can die from being stressed. Several websites can direct you to the proper setup for your hermit crabs, and with the PROPER setup and feeding (no commercial foods, the preservatives in them are toxic to the crabs), they CAN live for 20+ years.

Thanks for all that good information crabbyjo. This is the kind of response I hope we see more of as there will always be those who have a lot of experience raising different types of pets.
