I have to call attention to your reference to keeping hermit crabs in a "large bowl, up to a 10 gallon tank". It has been found as more people keep hermit crabs for pets, that while they are somewhat low maintenance and after the initial cost, they are pretty cheap to keep. But much is needed if you want your crab to live longer than 6 months. They need a glass home (10gal minimum), a lid to keep in humidity and temp, gauges to track temp and humidity, both ocean salt water and fresh water bowls, dechlorinator, a safe substrate, lots of extra shells, climbing toys and fake greenery, hiding spots, etc. Even with all of this, they can die from being stressed. Several websites can direct you to the proper setup for your hermit crabs, and with the PROPER setup and feeding (no commercial foods, the preservatives in them are toxic to the crabs), they CAN live for 20+ years.

hi! thanks for this article! we ended up loving crystal based cat litter once we started using our automatic litter box. we hadnt heard about it until then, and i would highly reccomend it to others. the crystal litter absorbs urine and our litter box automatically self-cleaned and rakes the poop away so we are very happy litter box (and cat!) owners. We invested in a scoopfree litter box (scoopfree.com) and have been very pleased with it as a whole. Again, thanks for the article!
